- Causes of admission, mortality and pathological findings in European hedhehogs: reports from two university centers in Italy and Switzerland
2024-06-22 European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are nocturnal insectivores frequently found in urban areas. In the last decades, their population has declined in various European countries and human activities have emerged as significant contributors to this trend. While the literature has mainly focused on trauma as the major cause of mortality, few authors have considered pathological findings. The present study is based on the results of full post-mortem examinations performed on 162 European hedgehogs in Italy and 109 in Switzerland. Unlike in previous studies, the main cause of mortality was infectious diseases (60.5%), followed by traumatic insults (27.7%). The lungs were the main organ affected, showing mostly lymphoplasmacytic (45.9%), granulomatous (18.1%) or suppurative (8.2%) pneumonia. Nematodes were detected in 57.2% of all lungs and were significantly associated with pneumonia (p-value < 0.001). To our knowledge, this is the first study to report infectious diseases as the main cause of hedgehog death, emphasizing the need for wildlife rescue centers to adopt appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Further research is necessary to determine the broad range of infectious agents that affect this species and elucidate their interplay with the host. Finally, citizen sensitization should be implemented to promote responsible behaviors that could reduce human-related traumatic events.
- Efficacy of low-dose tylvalosin for the control of clostridiosis in broilers and its effect on productive parameters
2013-04 The study was carried out under field conditions in a commercial farm, and 1,440 as-hatched Ross-308 broilers were included. Broilers were randomly distributed into 24 experimental 4-m2 pens (60 broilers/pen). Pens were randomized to the 3 treatment groups: a) tylvalosin 10 mg/kg of live BW during 2 d, b) positive control (tylosin during 2 d), and c) negative control (no treatment). The drugs were provided in the water supply. Mortality, individual BW, and feed intake were assessed. Clostridium presence was assessed in fecal and cecal samples, coccidian oocyst counts were assessed in fecal samples, and bacterial diversity was assessed in ileal content. Live BW at 42 d old was significantly better in the tylvalosin group than in tylosin and no-treatment groups, with tylvalosin-treated broilers reaching 80 to 100 g higher final live weight. Average daily gain results mirrored BW findings. The improvement of feed conversion rate with tylvalosin amounted to 0.13 and to 0.10 versus tylosin and no-treatment, respectively, with mortality being similar in all groups. Significantly reduced sulfite-reducing Clostridium and Clostridium perfringens counts in tylvalosin and tylosin groups versus the no-treatment group were observed in cecum content samples. In conclusion, according to the present study results, tylvalosin, at doses substantially lower than registered for poultry in Europe, has proven effective in controlling the colonization of the cecum by Clostridium ssp. in broilers, improving some productive performances.
- Pathological spectrum of ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma in small ruminants: a focus on the mixed form
2023-09-06 Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) is a contagious respiratory tumor of small ruminants, manifesting in chronic weight loss and respiratory failure. Infection with the betaretrovirus jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) is the cause of OPA. Here, we describe the gross and microscopic features of twenty-six sheep and one goat with naturally occurring JSRV-associated OPA. All the animals included in this study had pulmonary lesions morphologically consistent with OPA, but the majority of the observed lesions demonstrated features of both the classical and the atypical form of OPA, and were, therefore, classified grossly as mixed. The gross lesions were located mainly in the cranial pulmonary lobes, were multifocal to coalescing, variable in number and size, flat to slightly raised, firm, and white to grey. Histologically, the cases were classified according to the predominant architectural patterns as lepidic, papillary, acinar, or mixed; the mixed histological pattern was the most prevalent. The aim of this study was to describe the gross and microscopic spectrum of OPA in naturally infected small ruminants from Spain. The mixed form of OPA is less commonly reported, and can be confused with other concurrent pulmonary pathologies (such as BALT hyperplasia in SRLV-associated pneumonia or lungworm granulomas).
- Phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance of "Listeria spp." in Spain
2024-06 Listeriosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii. The genus Listeria currently includes 27 recognized species and is found throughout the environment. The number of systematic studies on antimicrobial resistance in L. monocytogenes isolates from domestic farms using antimicrobial substances is limited. Importantly, dairy ruminant farms are reservoir of hypervirulent lineage I L. monocytogenes isolates, previously associated with human clinical cases. Considering that the classes of antibiotics used in food-producing domestic animals are frequently the same or closely related to those used in human medicine, studies about the impact of antibiotic use on the acquisition of antibiotic resistance in Listeria spp. in domestic animal farms are, therefore, of high importance. Here, susceptibility to 25 antibiotics was determined. Eighty-one animal-related, 35 food and 21 human pathogenic Listeria spp. isolates and 114 animal-related non-pathogenic Listeria spp. isolates were tested. Whole genome sequencing data was used for molecular characterization. Regarding L. monocytogenes, 2 strains from the clinical-associated linage I showed resistance to erythromycin, both related to dairy ruminants. Acquired resistance to one antibiotic was exhibited in 1.5% of L. monocytogenes isolates compared with 14% of non-pathogenic Listeria spp. isolates. Resistance to tetracycline (7.9%), doxycycline (7.9%), penicillin (4.4%), and ampicillin (4.4%) were the most frequently observed in non-pathogenic Listeria spp. While resistance to two or more antibiotics (5.6%) was most common in Listeria spp., isolates, resistance to one antibiotic was also observed (1.6%). The present results show that non-pathogenic Listeria spp. harbour antimicrobial resistance genes.
- Prevalence and factors related to "Leishmania infantum" infection in healthy horses ("Equus caballus") from Eastern Spain
2023-09-11 Leishmaniosis is a zoonosis caused by Leishmania spp., an intracellular protozoan parasite. This parasite is transmitted by sandflies, and the disease is endemic in the Mediterranean basin. In recent years, the number of species which could be a reservoir of the parasite is increased. One of the most relevant species is the horse, due to their contact with humans and ability to control the disease, thus being a possible silent reservoir. In this study, we have analyzed the prevalence and factors related to L. infantum infection in healthy horses in the Mediterranean region. Epidemiological data and serum samples were obtained from 167 apparently healthy horses, and the presence of L. infantum was evaluated via the ELISA method and real-time PCR. The results show 27.5% of prevalence and that the main factors related to infection are equine breed, morphotype, outdoor living, use, and season. In conclusion, the prevalence of L. infantum infection in apparently healthy horses from eastern Spain (Mediterranean basin) is elevated. To control this zoonosis, it would be advisable to carry out more studies on this and other species that could be silent reservoirs of the parasite, as well as carry out measures such as the use of repellents on a regular basis.
- Protocolo de obtención de Plasma Rico en Plaquetas (PRP) en el gato ("Felis silvestris catus") y su relación con enfermedades víricas felinas (Leucemia e Inmunodeficiencia)
2024-03-04 PRGF®-Endoret® se caracteriza por una concentración moderada de PLT y la ausencia de glóbulos rojos y leucocitos. El objetivo de este trabajo es estandarizar un protocolo de obtención de PRP para el gato y estudiar cómo la presencia de enfermedades virales como la leucemia (FeLV) y la inmunodeficiencia felina (VIF) podrían influir en su calidad y composición. Se incluyeron en el estudio 30 gatos sanos y se recogieron 3 tubos de 9 ml de sangre y se centrifugaron siguiendo diferentes protocolos: 255 g, 260 gy 265 g durante 10 minutos. Los resultados demostraron que el proceso de centrifugación a 265 g durante 10 minutos logró una concentración óptima de PLT, sin presencia de leucocitos. Respecto al VPM, fue significativamente mayor en la sangre basal que en las fracciones PRP y PPP. Las concentraciones de PDGF-BB y TGF-ß1 fueron estadísticamente mayores en la fracción PRP que en la fracción PPP. Posteriormente, se aplicó el protocolo estandarizado a 11 gatos positivos para FeLV y 16 gatos positivos para FIV. La concentración de PLT en gatos FeLV no alcanzó el mínimo requerido por la tecnología PRGF®-Endoret®, sin embargo, los valores se acercaron a los de gatos sanos. Por otro lado, el protocolo estandarizado no fue reproducible en gatos FIV.
- Genotypic comparison of "Pasteurella multocida" from healthy animals at entry to the feedlots with that and from bovine respiratory disease-affected animals during the fattening period
2023-08-22 The aim of this study was to investigate the possible genotypic differences between commensal "Pasteurella multocida" isolates from apparently healthy animals (AHA) at the time of entry to feedlots and those from BRD-affected animals (BRD-AA). A total of 20 batches of beef calves in seven feedlots were followed-up during the fattening period. P. multocida was isolated from 28.1% of AHA and 22.9% of BRD-AA. All isolates belonged to the A: L3 genotype. Most isolates from clinical cases (81.0%) grouped into a PFGE cluster were significantly associated with BRD cases (OR, 24.9; 95% CI, 6.4–96.2). The whole genomes of 14 isolates representative of the pulsotypes most frequently detected in BRD-AA and AHA were sequenced and compared with 53 bovine genomes belonging to the identified ST13, ST79, and ST80 genotypes for a global comparison. No differences were found in the virulence-associated gene content between sequence types (STs) globally or between BRD-AA and AHA isolates in this study. Significantly, ST79 isolates harbored ARGs, conferring resistance to different antimicrobials, including macrolides and tetracyclines, which are commonly used for the treatment of BRD. Two Spanish ST79 isolates carried an ICE highly similar to ICE Tn7407, which was recently detected in Germany, suggesting that ST79 P. multocida isolates in Europe and North America may be associated with different ICEs.

- Effect of breed on hematological and biochemical parameters of apparently healthy dogs infected with zoonotic pathogens endemic to the Mediterranean Basin
2024-05-21 Dogs are considered the main reservoir of several zoonoses endemic to the Mediterranean Basin. In this study, a prevalence of infections and coinfections of canine vector-borne diseases was analyzed in apparently healthy dogs of different canine pure breeds in Sicily (Italy), where these diseases are endemic. The seroprevalence of Leishmania infantum, Ricketsia ricketsii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Erlichia canis was assessed, as single and coinfections. Biochemical and hematological parameters were evaluated, and epidemiological factors, including sex, age, and canine breed, were recovered. The most frequent infection was L. infantum (45.61%), following R. ricketsii (36.84%), both as single, double, or triple coinfections. Coinfections change the biochemical and hematological parameters of the host, and canine breeds are related to the infection frequency and the parameters observed during infections. Changes in the complete blood count (CBC) and biochemical values also differ between canine breeds, with the Cirneco dell’Etna dogs infected with L. infantum being the animals presenting the most interesting results in our study. High values of RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), the albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio, and albumin and low levels of β-2 globulin and γ-globulin were found only in this canine breed, suggesting some resistance to infection in these dogs. Future studies about the immune response of this canine breed could be interesting to determine their possible resistance to zoonotic pathogens, such as L. infantum.
- Monitoring platelet function in marine mammals: intracellular Ca2+ mobilization as a biomarker of platelet activation
2024-01 Platelet functionality plays a crucial role in marine mammals. Alterations in platelet function can result from stress, pathologies, or exposure to xenobiotics, among others. The early detection of platelet function abnormalities is essential in these species to prevent advanced pathology and mitigate potential risks. Our main objective was to establish a range of physiological values of platelet function in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and walruses (Odobenus rosmarus). Intraplatelet Ca2+ mobilization using adenosine diphosphate (ADP) as a platelet agonist was used as a platelet function biomarker, adapting the methodology previously described by us in dolphins (Felipo-Benavent et al., 2022) to the rest of the species. The assay was also adapted to a seal (Phoca vitulina). Numerical indicators of intraplatelet Ca2+ mobilization kinetics were established, and statistical analyses were performed to compare the effects of species, sex, age, aquarium and species. Significant differences were observed between species, being the platelets of the sea lions the more reactive to the agonist. This work demonstrates the usefulness of this assay in the diagnosis or monitoring of animals with hemostatic diseases, showing two clinical cases in which intraplatelet calcium mobilization values were altered in marine mammals suffering haemorrhages. This assay may also serve as a means to monitor environmental changes and their potential impact on the health of marine mammal populations.
