Estereotipos hacia asiáticos orientales en matemáticas en España

Abstract

Las investigaciones sobre los estereotipos étnicos para los asiáticos orientales en España son escasas y prácticamente inexistentes, actualmente únicamente se encuentran estudios de esta temática centrados en Estados Unidos, lo que no es representativo para el panorama español. Debido a dicha escasez, las preguntas de investigación en este trabajo son: ¿El estereotipo de que los asiáticos orientales son mejores en matemáticas representa de algún modo la realidad actual en España? ¿Se ve afectado el rendimiento en la asignatura de matemáticas por factores como actividades extraescolares o expectativas familiares? ¿Cuál es a realidad de los estudiantes asiáticos orientales en relación con su rendimiento académico y las matemáticas? Con una metodología cuantitativa, se ha dado respuesta a dichas preguntas y se han puesto a prueba las hipótesis de la investigación. Una de las principales conclusiones del estudio es que no hay una diferencia significativa entre el rendimiento de asiáticos orientales y el resto de sus compañeros en matemáticas, pese a que su realidad a nivel personal sí es dispar.

Research on ethnic stereotypes for East Asians in Spain is scarce and practically nonexistent, currently only studies on this topic are found in the United States, which is not representative for the Spanish context. Due to this scarcity, the research questions in this paper are: Does the stereotype that East Asians are better at mathematics represent in any way the current reality in Spain? Is performance in the subject of mathematics affected by factors such as extracurricular activities or family expectations? What is the reality of East Asian students in relation to their academic performance and mathematics? Using a quantitative methodology, these questions were answered and the research hypotheses were tested. One of the main conclusions of the study is that there is no significant difference between the performance of East Asians and their peers in mathematics, even though their personal reality is different.
