Limitaciones en la aplicación del Principio de Beneficencia en procedimientos quirúrgicos con un exclusivo fin estético

Abstract

No cabe duda de que muchas personas mejoran su imagen corporal y su autoestima a través de procedimientos quirúrgicos estéticos. En este caso, los médicos han logrado cumplir con la beneficencia y el interés del paciente. Pero existen casos no aislados y frecuentes, en los que los pacientes sufren daños corporales y mentales como consecuencia de esas intervenciones. Los procedimientos quirúrgicos implican más riesgos y complicaciones que los no quirúrgicos y algunos de ellos son dolorosos. En este tipo de cirugías estéticas, el mejor interés del paciente, su beneficencia a todos los niveles, exige no solamente que los procedimientos estéticos se realicen de modo seguro, sino que debería también exigirse un informe psicológico favorable previo a la cirugía que descarte posibles alteraciones psicosociales sobre la imagen corporal de los pacientes, alteraciones que por otra parte se han incrementado en la sociedad por la elevada presión estética actual. La aplicación correcta de la beneficencia médica debería contemplar la ejecución de alternativas no quirúrgicas con menos riesgos y cuyos beneficios están probados. ¿Resuelven siempre las cirugías estéticas la causa generadora de la insatisfacción corporal?

There is no doubt that many people improve their body image and their self-esteem through aesthetic/cosmetic surgical procedures. In this case, the doctors have managed to comply with the beneficence and the interest of the patient. But there are also cases, not isolated and frequent, in which patients suffer physical and mental damage as a result of these interventions. Surgical procedures involve more risks and complications than non-surgical ones and some of them are painful. In this type of aesthetic surgeries, the best interest of the patient, their beneficence at all levels, requires not only that aesthetic procedures be performed safely, but should also require a favorable psychological report prior to surgery to rule out possible alterations psychosocial on the body image of patients, alterations that on the other hand have increased in society due to the current high aesthetic pressure. The correct application of medical beneficence should contemplate the execution of non-surgical alternatives with fewer risks and whose benefits are proven. Do aesthetic surgeries always solve the cause that generates body dissatisfaction?
