2024 La literatura, junto con todas las visiones que nos ofrece, supone una fuente de conocimiento y de enriquecimiento. Cuando se desvincula de la vida, se convierte en letra muerta, pero cuando sirve de alimento al espíritu, este sin duda se enriquece de forma insospechada. En este sentido, podemos afirmar, sin duda, que la literatura juega un papel importante como forma de expresión artística. Los relatos, además, encierran un valor pedagógico innegable. A lo largo de la historia, los textos literarios han sido utilizados para la educación y la formación personal, pues pueden aportar diversas posibilidades según la temática escogida y permiten estimular en el aula el desarrollo integral. La literatura siempre ha sido vehículo trasmisor de ideas, es una gran educadora. El alumnado puede reconocer en los personajes situaciones identificables con su propia vida. Cuentos tradicionales, fábulas y relatos varios encierran moralejas y han sido útiles para educar a la humanidad a lo largo de la historia. La educación moral y la formación de virtudes son elementos importantes en el desarrollo de individuos y ciudadanos éticamente responsables, que participan en la sociedad. Y es que la esencia final de la labor educativa no es solo la formación técnica del individuo, sino también cultivar la virtud, orientando al educando hacia la exploración del bien, la verdad y la belleza. Pues bien, con este planteamiento nace Educación, virtudes y relatos, que gira en torno a la idea del didactismo de lo literario, y lo hace desde la confluencia de dos perspectivas: por un lado, el virtuosismo y los valores que podemos encontrar reflejados en algunos personajes de la literatura universal; por otro, el uso y la aplicación que de estos ejemplos literarios podemos hacer en el aula.
- Adapt or die?: how traditional Spanish TV broadcasters deal with the youth target in the new audio-visual ecosystem
2023-09 This paper analyses the way in which traditional broadcasters are reorienting their strategy to reach young audiences. From this starting point, we analyse the three specific offers launched very recently by Spain's leading audio-visual groups for youth audiences. The online platforms constitute an attempt to compete with the new internet-distributed video offerings that are gaining increasing ground across the world. These platforms (Flooxer from Atresmedia, MTMAD from Mediaset and PLAYZ from TVE) have contributed to the adaptation of their company groups to the new environment in order to get closer to this hard-to-reach young audience.
- Role of Gut Microbiome in Atherosclerosis: molecular and therapeutic aspects
2023 Atherosclerosis is one of the most relevant and prevalent cardiovascular diseases of our time. It is one of the pathological entities that increases the morbidity and mortality index in the adult population. Pathophysiological connections have been observed between atherosclerosis and the gut microbiome (GM), represented by a group of microorganisms that are present in the gut. These microorganisms are vital for metabolic homeostasis in humans. Recently, direct and indirect mechanisms through which GM can affect the development of atherosclerosis have been studied. This has led to research into the possible modulation of GM and metabolites as a new target in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. The goal of this review is to analyze the physiopathological mechanisms linking GM and atherosclerosis that have been described so far. We also aim to summarize the recent studies that propose GM as a potential target in atherosclerosis management.
- Is leishmaniasis the new emerging zoonosis in the world?
2023-12 Leishmania is a genus of parasitic protozoa that causes a disease called leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female sandflies. There are several different species of Leishmania that can cause various forms of the disease, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe, depending on species of Leishmania involved and the immune response of the host. Leishmania parasites have a variety of reservoirs, including humans, domestic animals, horses, rodents, wild animals, birds, and reptiles. Leishmaniasis is endemic of 90 countries, mainly in South American, East and West Africa, Mediterranean region, Indian subcontinent, and Central Asia. In recent years, cases have been detected in other countries, and it is already an infection present throughout the world. The increase in temperatures due to climate change makes it possible for sandflies to appear in countries with traditionally colder regions, and the easy movement of people and animals today, facilitate the appearance of Leishmania species in new countries. These data mean that leishmaniasis will probably become an emerging zoonosis and a public health problem in the coming years, which we must consider controlling it from a One Health point of view. This review summarizes the prevalence of Leishmania spp. around the world and the current knowledge regarding the animals that could be reservoirs of the parasite.
- Genetic haplotypes associated with immune response to "Leishmania infantum" infection in dogs
2023-09 Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease, and the main reservoir of the parasite is the dog, although recent years have seen an increase in other mammalian species. In the Mediterranean region, where it is an endemic disease, it is caused by the species Leishmania infantum. The Ibizan hound, an autochthonous breed of this region, appears to have a genetic resistance to parasitic infection, whereas other canine breeds, such as the Boxer, are susceptible to infection. These differences are related to the differentiated activation of the immune response, with the Ibizan hound activating the Th1 immune response, whereas the Boxer breed triggers the Th2 immune response. Cytokine levels and genomic haplotypes of several genes involved in the immune response were analysed in twenty-eight Ibizan hound (resistant canine breed model) and twenty-four Boxer (susceptible canine breed) without clinical signs in the Mediterranean region. Cytokine levels were analysed by ELISA commercial kits and haplotypes were studied using CanineHD DNA Analysis BeadChip including 165,480 mapped positions. The results show 126 haplotypes associated with differential immune response in dogs. Specifically, haplotypes in IL12RB1, IL6R, CIITA, THEMIS, NOXA1, HEY2, RAB38, SLC35D2, SLC28A3, RASEF and DAPK1 genes are associated with serum levels of IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-8, and IL-18. These results suggest that the resistance or susceptibility to Leishmania infantum infection could be a consequence of haplotypes in several genes related to immune response. Future studies are needed to elucidate the relationship of these haplotypes with immune response and gene expression regulation.
- Environmental gaseous pollutants are related to increase of acute coronary syndrome in Valencia region, Spain
2023-06 Introduction and aims: Environmental pollution are one of the most relevant risk factors to atherosclerosis. To know awareness about the importance of urban air pollution as a trigger for hospital admission due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS), this study analyzed levels of different gaseous air pollutants in the air and its correlation with number of ACS. Methods: Epidemiological data of patients admitted for ACS in five towns during the years 2006-2008 were recovered. Clinical data regarding admissions for ACS were obtained from the hospital admission services. Measures of seven air contaminants were recovered from the environmental stations. Mixed model including sex, age, location, and the average levels of air pollutants contaminants as fixed effects and its interaction were performed. Results: The incidence rate of ACS is higher in man than woman, and higher in older people than young. The maximum ACS were in the last trimester of the year, was the most elevated levels of gaseous pollutants have been found. Levels of NO2, NO, and CO are positively correlated between them, and negatively correlated with O3 levels. All air pollutants analyzed increase the number of ACS hospital admission in the five locations evaluated. Conclusions: Levels of gaseous pollutants are related between them, being the levels of NO2, NO, and CO, positively correlated, and negatively correlated with levels of O3. Number of ACS hospital admission increases with levels of five air gaseous pollutants studied.
- Challenging gender stereotypes in dance and physical education: exploring body percussion as a neutral practice
2024-03-29 The history of dance has long been associated with women, creating stereotypical limitations for men in this discipline, particularly evident in Physical Education (PE) where teachers often feel uncomfortable teaching Body Expression (BE) and dance content, especially male educators. Despite various artistic languages available for BE instruction in classrooms, body percussion (BP) has recently emerged as a multidisciplinary art form combining dance, theatre, and music, showing potential for transversal application in education. This study aimed to assess how BP practices are perceived by men and women and their effects on both genders. A specialized BP teaching application was introduced into higher education, involving 62 Spanish university students who completed the Profile Mood States questionnaire before and after the intervention. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences between men and women in pre- and post-tests. However, the findings indicated a positive experience for men, showcasing modifications in their emotional states – particularly reduced tension, depression, and anger, while exhibiting increased vigor. Fatigue, a common aspect in physically demanding PE activities, persisted. The study suggests that BP practices offer positive experiences related to BE and dance content, serving as a potentially more comfortable resource for classroom use compared to other artistic languages.
- Long-term complications according to silicone oil type : a single center cohort study
2024-03 Purpose: To study the incidence of macular edema (ME), ocular hypertension (OHT), emulsification and migration to the anterior chamber (AC) of silicone oil (SO) in patients after complex retina surgery, stratified by SO type. Methods: Retrospective, cohort study. Patients who underwent retina surgery with SO injection and extraction in our center were included. We compared the complication rates of ME, OHT, emulsification and migration to the AS according to SO type (1300cSt, 5700cSt and heavy SO). Data on age, sex, emulsification time, duration of the tamponade, previous retina surgeries and diagnosis were also gathered and included in a multivariate analysis. Results: We included 163 patients (mean age of 64.8 years; mean duration of the tamponade: 11 months). Rates of emulsification, ME, OHT and SO migration to the AC were similar in all groups (p = 0.998, 0.668, 0.915 and 0.360). ME was the most frequent complication (33.3-47.8%), which resolved after SO extraction in 77.6% of cases. The majority of cases with OHT persisted (61.7%). Emulsification was related to younger age (OR 0.94) and longer duration of the tamponade (OR 1.04). The odds of SO migration to the AC increased with emulsification (OR 2.78), recurrent retinal detachment (OR 0.99) and aphakia (OR 4.05). Conclusions: We propose SO extraction as the preferred treatment for ME during SO tamponade. SO extraction should be performed sooner in younger patients to avoid emulsification. In selected patients, we suggest a longer duration of the tamponade up to 11 months with a reasonable safety profile, regardless of the SO type.
