A journey through Latin American social and political thought

Abstract

Este capítulo ofrece un recorrido por el pensamiento social y político latinoamericano. La relevancia de la interpretación presentada en el capítulo se justifica por la importancia de estas obras en el escenario global contemporáneo de la teoría social y política. En la primera parte, se aborda el proceso de denominación como enmarcado. El énfasis recae en la discusión sobre el origen del término latinoamericano y cómo podemos entenderlo considerando la divergencia que ocurrió en el Nuevo Mundo. Se refiere al proceso por el cual América Latina perdió el nombre original de América que solía designarla como parte del Nuevo Mundo en la modernidad temprana y luego asumió una nueva designación comprensiva. En la segunda parte, se analiza la aparición de temas como raza, colonialidad y modernidad, y cómo se han desarrollado en el pensamiento social y político latinoamericano a lo largo del siglo XX. Como conclusión, se discutirá cómo los pensadores latinoamericanos han internalizado una crítica externa sobre el desarrollo de la modernidad en esta parte del mundo. Abogando por la idea de que debemos examinar las implicaciones modernas para entender el significado de la trayectoria histórica latinoamericana en ella.

This chapter offers a journey through a Latin American social and political thought. The relevance of the interpretation offered in the chapter is justified by the relevance of these works in the global, contemporary social and political theory scenario. In the first part of this chapter, I discuss the process of naming as framing. The emphasis is on the discussion about the origin of the term Latin American and how we can understand it considering the discussion about the divergence that happened in the new world. It refers to the process by which Latin America lost the original of name of America that used to designate it as part of the New World in early modernity and then assumed a new comprehensive designation. In the second part, I discuss the appearance of issues such as race, coloniality, and modernity and how they have developed in Latin American social and political thought over the course of the twentieth century. As a conclusion, it will be discussed how Latin American thinkers have internalized an external criticism about the development of modernity in this part of the world. Advocating the idea that we should look at the modern entanglements to understand the significance of Latin American historical trajectory on it.
