Tarifa, el Estrecho y los Almirantes de Castilla (1394-1478).

Abstract

La privilegiada posición de Tarifa entre el Atlántico y el Mediterráneo, atalayando el Estrecho, vinculó sus destinos a los del almirantazgo castellano desde los comienzos mismos de esta institución. En fecha tan temprana como la de 1262, cuando Alfonso X y el granadino Muhammad I acordaron en las vistas de Jaén un ataque conjunto contra Ceuta, el casteliano exigió la entrega previa de Tarifa y Gibraltar, entendiendo que sin estas plazas la preparación y ejecución del ataque no serían viables. Como sabemos, esta entrega nunca se realizó, haciendo posible que desde ellas se produjese, pocos años después, la entrada en 'España de los ejércitos meriníes que tanto daño causaron.

The privileged position of Tarifa between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, overlooking the Strait, linked its destinies to those of the Castilian admiralty from the very beginning of this institution. As early as 1262, when Alfonso X and the Granada-born Muhammad I agreed in the hearings of Jaén a joint attack against Ceuta, the Castilian demanded the prior delivery of Tarifa and Gibraltar, understanding that without these places the preparation and execution of the attack would not be viable. As we know, this delivery was never made, making it possible for few years later, the entry into 'Spain of the Merinid armies that caused so much damage.
